Home Learning

Our Home Learning programme for Years 3-6 is called ‘Rising Stars REAL CHOICES’. Research has shown that children need to broaden the types of activities they do for home learning to give them both academic and life skills to cope with life beyond school and home (seethe link below to read the full report). The best thing we can do to enable your children is to assist them with reading, basic numeracy and encourage them to become lifelong learners. The purpose of this home learning programme is to allow positive family interactions, allow children to pursue their own learning and give them an opportunity to learn effective time management skills.

The sharing of these home learning challenges in class is seen as a positive opportunity to build greater self-confidence for children.

Do encourage your child to read (read to them, with them and have them read to you), encourage them to practice their basic facts we send home or activities set for them through online programmes. These two things work! They make a difference. All the rest is optional!

So……

Home learning will consist of reading and basic facts for all.

In addition children from years 3 – 6 will be invited to take up the challenges the Hillcrest Normal, Rising Stars REAL CHOICES Challenges. The Hillcrest REAL CHOICES Challenge include learning opportunities in the arts, physical activities, numeracy and literacy, service in the community, and giving.

While the challenges are optional, our aim is that students will be motivated to take part, and will take the opportunity to learn new skills, develop an interest in their local community, and have fun with their family and whanau.

These challenges, and challenge evidence sheets, are available online and in your children’s home learning folders. 

Year 3    – Te Punga (Southern Cross)

Year 4    – Matariki (Pleiades)

Year 5/6 – Tautoru (Orion’s Belt)

Each participating child is to complete a set minimum of challenges (depending on their year level) by the due date, to earn a Gold, Silver or Bronze award.

  • They may do more than the set number of challenges if they wish
  • They must complete at least one challenge from each section
  • With the help of parents and teachers they may choose their own challenges (design a challenge). They must be approved by the teacher/parent: present with a plan
  • It is up to each child to meet with their teacher and show that they have completed each challenge (self-check, parent check and evidence – photos, logbook, digital presentation or notes)
  • It is quality not quantity that counts so they should take their time to do each challenge with excellence!
